DHS Targets Employers For Criminal Sanctions

The Dept. of Homeland Security has issued a press release announcing an new initiative to enforce existing criminal laws that prohibit employers from hiring undocumented workers.  Criminal convictions in the last fiscal year rose to 127, up from 46 the year before.  Last year, just one employer raid netted $15 million, more than all of the fines levied in the previous eight years.

DHS is also seeking a new law that would allow it to access social security records, to enable it to find and deport employees who are using fake social security numbers (and fine or jail their employers).
